Arrow Escape

Accessibility statement

We want everyone to be able to enjoy Arrow Escape. We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA for the website, and we've made the game itself playable without a mouse or touchscreen.

What we support

  • Keyboard play. Tab to the board, use the arrow keys to move between arrows (spatially, by direction) and press Enter or Space to launch. Shortcuts: H hint, U undo, R restart, P pause, + / − zoom. All buttons and dialogs are keyboard-reachable, and dialogs trap and restore focus.
  • Screen readers. The selected arrow's direction and position, each escape, each blocked move and the number of hearts left are announced through a live region.
  • Reduced motion. If your system asks for reduced motion, arrows fade instead of sliding and shakes are removed.
  • Not colour-only. Red arrows are explained in words, blocked moves also trigger a bump, a sound and a heart change, and hints use a pulsing halo as well as colour.
  • Zoom and contrast. Pages scale with browser zoom; dense boards have their own zoom controls. Black-on-white arrows have very high contrast, and there's a dark theme.
  • Touch. Generous tap targets and tap tolerance; drags never count as taps.

Known limitations

  • The puzzle is inherently visual. Screen-reader users can play using the announced arrow positions, but large boards are demanding without sight.
  • Vibration feedback isn't available on iOS Safari.
